Google is working on more transparency in certain areas. The Google Play Store now provides better information about the required Android version.

A new Android version is released once a year and there may also be brand new devices with older Android versions from the market launch.

This is a major challenge for users and above all for app developers. Google has now made some improvements in the Play Store to better inform us on this question.

You can check which Android version an app requires on the web and also directly in the Play Store app. However, the information can sometimes be very vague on the web, while the Play Store app has better knowledge of the APK files stored.

Google Play Store: app better than web

On the web, the information says “Required Android version” and on mobile simply “Android operating system”. I tried an app once. In fact, the exact Android version required was given directly on the phone, while the web only says “Varies by device”.
