Cyberpunk 2077: Fans fear CD Projekt has cut an expansion

Did CD Projekt cut one of the promised Cyberpunk 2077 expansions? Fans have been wondering since yesterday after the announcement regarding the maintenance of the Red Engine for the game. The reason? The announcement talks about expansion not expansions. Let’s read:

For the next episode of The Witcher video game series, we are moving from REDengine to Unreal Engine 5. However, REDengine, the technology that drives Cyberpunk 2077, is still being used in the development of the future expansion of Cyberpunk 2077.

The use of the singular is not liked by many, since in the past the Polish team had promised two expansions for Cyberpunk 2077. Furthermore, before the launch, they had promised more support than that received by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt which, as you will remember, had two major expansions. Moreover, in the promotional material of Cyberpunk 2077, reference was often made to “Expansion 1” and “Expansion 2”.

A tweet by Pawel Sasko, in which we clearly talk about a single expansion, also thought of reinforcing the voice:

Sasko is the quest Director of Cyberpunk 2077.

So it is well established that CD Projekt Red’s initial plans were to produce at least two major expansions for the game. In case one was cut, it would probably depend on the post-launch travails, as well as the difficult situation of the development team. On top of that, the sales would not go as planned. All of these factors may have contributed to an overall post-launch review to focus on more.
