On Monday, Epic Games released a RealityScan 3D scanning app for iOS/Android devices. It is reported that Epic acquired Capturing Reality in March last year, and “RealityScan” was developed by the company in cooperation with “Megascans” developer Quixel. As a free app, it converts photos taken by users’ mobile phones into high-fidelity 3D models.
In a blog post on Monday, Epic noted that RealityScan brings the best of features from the RealityCapture app for Windows to a long-lost mobile device. An advanced photogrammetry software still in limited beta testing, it can reconstruct 3D objects and scenes of any size from images or laser scans, with several times the speed of competing for software and unmatched mesh accuracy.
In contrast, traditional approaches to capturing real-world information for digital experiences tend to be technically complex and labor-intensive. But with the mobile version unlocked, the experience has become quite easy.
Interested friends can apply to join the test experience immediately, of which there are 10,000 places in the TestFlight channel on the iOS platform. If you’re not in a hurry, you can also wait patiently for the “early access” launch later this spring. If all goes well, Android users can also get “early access” by the end of the year.
In terms of experience, after logging in to the Epic Games account, users can hold down the shutter and circle around the subject. After collecting enough information, the app generates a model that can be checked.
If you’re not happy with this, you can remodel it in 3D and export it to Sketchfab. Jacob Siegal of BGR said he waited less than 5 minutes to see a previously shot model on Sketchfab.
If you’ve never used Sketchfab before, you can register directly through your Epic Games account (there’s even a free Pro subscription). Michal Jancosek, the co-founder of Capturing Reality, said RealityScan is just the first step in making 3D scans available to all creators.
They believe that the tool can greatly help users of all skills to better understand the underlying scanning principles, bridging the gap between beginners and professionals. Finally, Capturing Reality is excited to continue improving based on community feedback and will introduce more new features as it approaches the full release.
