Xbox Series S memory limit gives developers a headache

In this generation, Microsoft has taken a new approach, launching two new consoles instead of one. One of them is the less powerful but cheaper Xbox Series S. Regarding this “next-generation console”, there are already many games that have problems with it, such as “FIFA 22”. Some developers have also questioned the Xbox Series S before.

Digital Foundry, which specializes in technical analysis of hardware and games, mentioned in their recent podcast that they’ve heard from a lot of developers that making games for the Xbox Series S is a pain. Not because of its CPU or GPU, but because of its memory limitations.

In case you didn’t know, the Xbox Series X has 16GB of RAM, while the XSS has only 10G. Counting the operating system takes up 2G, the actual memory used by game developers is only 8GB.

Considering that Microsoft has a large number of first-party games, such as “Starry Sky” and “Crimson Fall”, which have recently been delayed, the Xbox Series S may also experience some performance problems when running these games. Or, Microsoft first-party studios have to make enough optimizations for the Xbox Series S.
