Android Auto for smartphones will soon be discontinued

Now, before some panic, because they haven’t been following the tech news of the last few months so closely, let me pick you up for a moment: Last summer, Google confirmed that the smartphone app “Android Auto” would be discontinued.

Android Auto is the mirrored interface when you connect your smartphone to the car via cable or wirelessly. However, the function itself is not really discontinued, but it migrates to the Google Assistant as “Driving Mode”.

Android Auto: This is the end of the app

That was the status about a year ago and after that, it was skilfully ignored by Google and everything continued to function normally. Yesterday, however, an “Android Auto for phone screens will stop working soon” appeared with many users:

So here we go, Google will be retiring the app “soon”. But what I find a bit of a shame: Google’s communication is very modest. You just get a hint and don’t know exactly what’s going to happen next.

Android Auto: Statement from Google

When asked, Google didn’t want to say when that would happen, soon is a very flexible term. In an official statement, Google only advertises that the new design for Android Auto will be available soon and that the function will be retained.

For those using Android Auto in supported vehicles, that experience isn’t going away – and in fact, we announced a major user interface improvement at Google I/O recently. For those using the Android Auto app on the phone, there will be a transition to Google Assistant driving mode, which is our next evolution of the mobile driving experience. At this time we are unable to provide any further details.

What does that mean? Wait, we are now in a transition phase. You can continue to use the app for Android Auto, or you can get used to the Google Assistant because you have to start the function there at some point.

To this day I still don’t understand why Google makes it so complicated. Do you want to push the Google Assistant with it? Allegedly. We will of course keep you up to date here and inform you when the app for Android Auto is removed.
