U.S. security agency escalates investigation into Tesla or calls for recall of 830,000 Autopilot vehicles

NEW YORK, June 10 (Reuters) – The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Thursday it was escalating its investigation into 830,000 Tesla vehicles equipped with Autopilot, which may seek recalls Necessary steps before these cars.

Last August, NHTSA launched an initial assessment of the system performance of 765,000 Tesla vehicles after about a dozen crashes involving Tesla vehicles and parked emergency vehicles. The agency said Thursday that it had confirmed six other incidents. NHTSA is escalating the investigation into an engineering analysis, and if it deems it necessary to call for a recall, it must do so first.

NHTSA is reviewing whether Tesla vehicles can adequately ensure owners stay focused. The agency added to evidence that in most crashes investigated, owners followed Tesla’s warning strategy, designed to force drivers to pay attention, raising questions about the strategy’s effectiveness.

NHTSA said the upgrade “is intended to expand existing crash analysis, evaluate additional datasets, perform vehicle assessments, and explore the extent to which Autopilot and related Tesla systems may undermine the effectiveness of vehicle owner supervision, exacerbating Human factors or behavioral security risks.”
