Tech industry groups urge FTC to investigate Tesla’s self-driving car ads

A lobbying group representing the tech industry is urging the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Tesla’s claims about the self-driving capabilities of its cars, saying the automaker’s ads misled consumers. The Chamber of Progress sent a letter to Federal Trade Commission Chairman Lina Khan on Tuesday, saying Tesla’s ad “could lead drivers to believe that Tesla’s vehicles are self-driving cars and that drivers can be distracted, potentially threatening The safety of the drivers, passengers and others on the road.”

The industry group represents Alphabet Inc. It also includes several Tesla competitors, such as Google’s self-driving car development company Waymo LLC, self-driving car company Cruise LLC, and Amazon’s self-driving taxi subsidiary Zoox. , self-driving delivery startup Nuro, etc.

Tesla and the FTC did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Two Democratic senators, Richard Blumenthal and Ed Markey, both raised similar questions last year. They urged Khan to investigate Tesla’s marketing, saying it repeatedly exaggerated vehicle features and posed a threat to traffic safety.

Khan said in an interview this month that he was “concerned” about lawmakers’ concerns about Tesla’s Autopilot, but did not confirm the launch of an official investigation.
