Gboard to introduce new feature enabling text recovery with ‘Undo’ button

Google’s renowned keyboard application, Gboard, continues to evolve with an array of practical keyboard features, and its repertoire is ever-expanding. The latest addition to Gboard appears to be an “undo” button designed to restore deleted text effortlessly.

Developer RKBDI has drawn attention to an upcoming feature in Gboard that grants users the ability to undo text deletions. The function to undo actions has been a fundamental component of text editing apps and software for many years, and it is already present in numerous Android applications. For instance, Google Keep incorporates a built-in undo button.

However, this functionality has been absent from virtual keyboards at a systemwide level. While physical keyboards on Windows and macOS offer the universally recognized “Ctrl + Z” shortcut for undoing actions in almost any application, no such option has been available in Gboard until now. Fortunately, this is about to change.

Google is in the process of integrating this much-anticipated capability across the entire system via Gboard’s buttons. A brief video demonstrates this feature in action within a search bar, which lacks a built-in undo option. In the video, text is typed, deleted, and then seamlessly restored using the newly introduced undo button. While this option resides within Gboard’s overflow buttons and may be somewhat concealed, Google has recently implemented a feature allowing users to reorganize the toolbar with these buttons, potentially amplifying the impact of this powerful addition.

It is worth noting that Gboard has long featured an “undo” option specifically tailored for autocorrect, but this forthcoming enhancement significantly surpasses that functionality.

The timing for the public release of this feature remains uncertain. Presently, it is accessible exclusively through the latest Gboard beta version; however, it is tucked away behind a disabled flag, making it less user-friendly and easily accessible.
